Pudge Wars hit a ludicrous milestone recently. We hit 600,000 subscribers in the Steam Workshop, over 500,000 unique page views in the workshop, and this very website hit over 1,000,000 page views! In lieu of these events, we would like to say thank you to our player base by improving our game, and adding new content to be enjoyed. This update has been wholly made as a thank you to you, our incredibly supportive player base.

Redesigned UI

In order to make the game feel more intuitive towards newer players, a new system has been put in place visually explaining the difference between Pudge Wars and regular Dota 2 gameplay. A game info panel has also been created in order to briefly explain the game rules to new players.

The game info panel can be triggered by pressing the information but on the very left of the screen, either during gameplay or during the game load. The informational guideline UI can be toggled on an off by pressing the toggle button to the right of the hero portraits on the top.

Redesigned Economy

An essential difference between the classic Warcraft 3 Pudge Wars and our Dota 2 Pudge Wars has been the economy, with the current Pudge Wars feeling slower. In order to address this, we had a specialist in video game economies (WinD.Shadow) take a look at improving our game. The cost of each item in the game has been modified. You can find the full list of changes below.

    Bug Fixes

While the Dota 2: Reborn update brought countless needed improvements, it also brought bugs, as is the case in any major update. We ask for patience, as we continue to work towards removing every bug currently present. The following is a list of bugs fixed since the Dota 2: Reborn update.

    • Fixed loading error due to stat loading and Ash47’s load helper.
    • Fixed script error from datadriven damage dealing modifier.
    • Fixed several custom items being swapped with recipes for newer Dota 2 items.
    • Fixed health bar offset on Reveal item.
    • Fixed script error where runes would be removed twice.
    • Fixed script error caused by Shield Barrier rune removal calling on a null variable.
    • Temporarily removed Lightning rune due to critical bug.
    • Fixed loading error due to a null variable being called when a player connected.
    • Fixed error where Pudge would still be stunned after pre-game voting.
•Fixed script error caused by calling on statcollection when game ended
    • Fixed script error caused by script attempting to cleanup disconnected player's Pudge before they even had a Pudge.
•Fixed script error caused by calling on null Upgrade Ability.
•Fixed issue with Strength Tome bonus health being reset when stats were recalculated.

We are aware that there are still several bugs out there, including a host crash bug and a bug where Pudges spawn without abilities. These bugs will be fixed as soon as possible.

If you want to report a bug the best way is to make a post in our subreddit with pictures and descriptions of the problem, and we will try to fix it as soon as possible. Hello!

We have not updated the website in a while, but now it is time for that.

In early August Valve released the Alpha for Custom Games Workshop tools. This alpha changed how a lot of things works. Maps, particles, sounds, and scripts all had some major changes to them made, so we had to spend a lot of time fixing everything up again.

We had Pudge Wars playable fairly quickly on the Workshop, but we have been working since them to improve it and make it work as good as possible on the new platform.

Now we have come to a point where we feel that we have everything working as it used to, and we even have some completely new changes implemented into Pudge Wars.
    Some examples for that is:

    • Meathook cooldown is now 3 seconds (from 8)
    • The regular Dota announcer has been disabled
    • Added custom Headshot and Deny headers (see picture below)
    • We started working on some stat-tracking to help us identify problems or other other things that we should be aware of (Special thanks to Jimmydorry, Ash47 and Sinz for the stat-tracking backend)

We put all the changes up to now into the changelog found here: v0.80

We are aware that people find it really hard to actually have everybody load into a custom game right now, unfortunately this is not something that we control. Valve is responsible for the lobbies and for people joining the games, so we have to be patient and let continue working on their tools to make it as stable as possible.

We will continue working on Pudge Wars to make it as balanced and fun as possible. Please let us now if you have any complaints or suggestions.

A very large update has been in the works for a while and the time has come to release it. This update contains a large amount of new features, including a new ability layout and new max level bonuses. This update includes a couple of small changes too, including the level cap being raised to level 40, allies now being deniable with auto attacks, and the rune dissapearing when it is hooked.

    Ability Layout

An issue with porting over Warcraft 3 mods to Dota has always been that Warcraft had a much larger amount of skill slots, something that is limited in Dota. With the way we had it set up before, we could not fit the active max level bonus of some items. This is how the new system works:

    Smiley face

With this new system, we free up needed spots. The way this works is you have your hook, three empty slots and your up arrow. When you cast the up arrow, it takes you to the hook upgrades. You can then cast the down arrow to return to your regular skills.

    Max Level Bonuses

An important part in Pudge Wars is the max level bonuses of an item, which is a bonus that is obtained when you upgrade an item enough to reach it's fifth level. This bonus can be active or passive. While we did have some max level bonuses before, here are the ones we added:

    Active

  • Detonate (Techie's Explosive Barrel)

    - Pudge detonates his barrel, borrowed from Techies, blowing up and killing himself and others around him.

  • Fissure (Earthshaker's Totem)

    - Pudge slams the ground with Earthshaker's totem, fissuring the earth while stunning and damaging enemy units in a line. Creates an impassable ridge of stone.

  • Passive

  • Toss (Tiny's Arm)

    - Toss stuns target on impact for 2 seconds and deals 200 damage.

  • Rupture (Strygwyr's Claws)

    - Leaves a rupture on the target after the hook finishes.

  • Lifesteal (Nai'x's Jaw)

    - Pudge's normal attacks steal 15% life.

  • Tomes

Aside from these changes, we have also added new items, tomes. When purchased and then used, they grant you with a permanent bonus. There are currently three tomes, which are Wisdom, Power and Strength. The Wisdom tome grants you experience, the Power tome grants you damage and the Strength tome grants you health. These tomes are slightly different than the Warcraft 3 ones.

    The Launch

    Pudge Wars v0.20

With the public release of Pudge Wars comes a new update. Countless new items have been added, the vision has been reworked and the map has been remade from scratch. It is now much closer to the original map in terms of size, layout and design. You can find the complete changelog here.

    The future

As always, we will continue to work on and update Pudge Wars. Our goal is to achieve 100% parity with the original Warcraft 3 Pudge Wars. We're still long ways from that, but once we get there we will start to balance it ourselves and add new content.

    F.A.Q.

    Can I test the mod?

You can play what's out on D2Moddin and we'll patch things through as we finish them.

Can I have the source code?

Right now we're not releasing the source code. It's too big of a liability without official Valve support.

    How can I help?

We got it covered. Our team is made up of 2 coders, a mapper and an artist. We don't need anything else at the moment.

Is this made by Valve, like Diretide?

Not at all. Although this is a mod for a Valve game, it is completely user made, aside from Valve assets.

Will I be able to play this directly from the Dota 2 client?

Not yet, if ever. We have had no contact with Valve through this so we can't be sure what they will or won't do.

I want to make my own mod, how can I start?

The best place to start is right here. This has links to everything you might need.

The time has finally come to officially announce Pudge Wars for Dota 2, a remake of the classic WC3 Mod. This project is the result of months of work by Kobb and Aderum, with some help from other people.

    What is Pudge Wars?

Pudge Wars is primarily a team game, like Dota 2. Each player controls a Pudge with only one spell to use: Meat Hook. The teams faces off on a square map divided by an uncross-able river. The first team to get 50 kills wins the game. Kill players to level up and spend ability points to upgrade the damage, radius, distance, and speed of your hook. Buy custom items such as the Grappling Hook to help you secure even more kills. Here is a video of some gameplay. Keep in mind this video is from a while back and some things have been added since then.

    Features

    Headshot

Instantly kill your enemy by hitting a hook when he is already being hooked by another player. Currently this only works with enemy hooks. In the future we plan to implement allied headshot denies.

    HEADSHOT

    Items

Pudge Wars not only offers a new map and new ways of upgrading your Meat Hook, it also contains custom items. You can purchase consumables like healing salves or gameplay changing items like the Grappling Hook. You can purchase upgrades for your item up to level 5. They will get stronger at each level.

    Smiley face

Right now these items are in the game:

    • Grappling Hook - Pudge launches a grappling hook at a structure, allowing him to pass through otherwise impassable terrain.
    • Tiny's Arm - Allows Pudge to throw allies and enemies alike to targeted unit.
    • Lycan's Paws - Empowers Pudge's usually plodding movespeed with the quickfooted spirit of Banehallow.
    • N'aix's Jaw - N'aix's ravenous hunger overcomes Pudge, making his hooks steal life.
    • Observer Ward - Gives vision of an area around the observer ward.
    • Reveal - Gives true sight in an area around the targeted location.
    • Healing Salve - Regenerates a targeted units hit points over time.
    • Potion of Greater Healing - Instantly heals the unit.
Please note that most of the icons are temporary and subject to change.

    Upgrading your Hook

You can upgrade the range, damage, speed and size of your Meat Hook by using your upgrade points. Each upgrade costs 1 point and you gain 1 point every time you level up. You can see the amount of points you currently have in your buffs bar.

    Smiley face

    How to Play

Pudge Wars is ready to be played but we need a platform to allow people to play it on. There is a platform that is almost ready and you will be able to play it there very easily and very soon. All you will need to do is press play. Meanwhile, we will try to host some matches using dedicated servers.

    More Information

Pudge Wars for Dota 2 will be continuously updated. Some things are not yet possible to create with Valves current interface for making custom games, but as soon as Valve releases better interfaces we will update Pudge Wars to make it as close to the original as possible. The easiest way to know when we update Pudge Wars is to be subscribed to our subreddit or to visist the Changelogs section of this page. You can also join our Steam Group.

If you want to report a bug the best way is to make a post in our subreddit with pictures and descriptions of the problem, and we will try to fix it as soon as possible. If you want to contact us personally you can do so through Steam, here and here.
